Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: Puerto Gaitan Ram, Wild Ram Cichlid, German Blue Ram (Wild Form)
Origin: Colombia (Meta, Puerto Gaitan)
The Puerto Gaitan locality form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is collected from the Meta River drainage near Puerto Gaitan in the Colombian Llanos — one of the primary source populations for wild rams in the hobby. Wild specimens from this area display the species' natural colouration in its purest form: vivid electric blue iridescent scales, intense red belly, bold black lateral spot, and black-dotted dorsal fin, without the colour degradation seen in many commercial tank-raised strains.
Wild rams are significantly hardier than most commercially bred specimens in terms of disease resistance, but they are still demanding regarding water temperature and quality. Warm, soft, slightly acidic water is non-negotiable. They are best kept as a pair in a species-specific setup or with small, peaceful tankmates in a community aquarium.
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is a substrate spawner that deposits eggs on flat surfaces or leaf litter. Biparental care is attentive and the pair will vigorously defend the nest and free-swimming fry. Wild-form fish typically prove easier to spawn than over-domesticated commercial strains.
Water: 27-30°C, pH 5.0-6.5, very soft (0-5 dGH); warm temperature essential — chilling is fatal. Tank: Minimum 80L for a pair; fine sand, flat stones and leaf litter for spawning; dense plants along back. Feeding: Small sinking pellets, live and frozen Artemia, daphnia, bloodworm; varied diet maintains colour. Breeding: Open substrate spawner; pair spawns on flat surfaces; both parents guard eggs and fry actively. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras; avoid large or aggressive tankmates.
