Pulchra Rainbowfish

Melanotaenia pulchra hails from the vast Sepik River system of Papua New Guinea, one of the most biodiverse river basins in the world. It is a medium-sized rainbowfish with a silvery-blue base colouration overlaid with rows of scales tipped in red, orange, and gold, creating a glittering, jewel-like effect under aquarium lighting. Dominant males develop the most intense scale edging and carry bright yellow-edged fins.

This species is moderately available through specialist importers and is considered an excellent intermediate-level rainbowfish with manageable care requirements. It prefers clean, moderately hard, slightly alkaline water with good oxygenation. A spacious aquarium with dense planting at the sides and rear provides both shelter and a backdrop that highlights the fish's iridescence.

Melanotaenia pulchra is a willing and capable spawner when in good condition. Standard rainbowfish spawning protocols — conditioning on varied live and frozen foods, fine-leaved plants or mops in a separate spawning vessel — yield consistent results. Fry are reasonably robust compared to some related species.

Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 23–28°C, moderately hard; excellent filtration and regular water changes are key. Tank: Minimum 150 L; spacious with dense planting at margins and open midwater swimming area. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets; live and frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms regularly. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants or mops; separate spawning tank advised; fry robust and straightforward to raise. Compatibility: Peaceful community species; excellent with other New Guinean rainbowfish.
