Odontostilbe pulchra
Also known as: Pulchra Tetra, Pretty Tetra
Origin: South America (Guiana Shield, Venezuela)
Odontostilbe pulchra is a compact, energetic tetra from the Guiana Shield and Venezuelan drainages. It bears a prominent dark lateral stripe from the operculum to the caudal base, and its fins are clear with subtle yellow pigmentation in healthy specimens. The species is among the more robust and adaptable Characids from this region.
In the aquarium it is a perpetually active mid-water schooling fish that benefits from a spacious tank and groups of ten or more. It is completely peaceful and coexists well with a wide range of community fish. Moderate water flow is appreciated, reflecting its active lifestyle in flowing Guiana streams.
Feeding presents no challenge: standard flake, pellets, and frozen foods are accepted enthusiastically. This is a recommended choice for aquarists seeking an active, visually engaging schooling tetra that is slightly unusual in the hobby.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to medium (GH 3–15, KH 1–7); moderate flow preferred. Tank: 100 L minimum; open mid-water swimming with planted background; moderate current. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods; separate breeding tank recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similarly sized community fish, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids.
