Lepomis gibbosus
Origin: North America (captive bred)
The Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) displays a breathtaking mosaic of blue, green, orange, and red spots on a deep, laterally compressed body, making it one of the most colourful coldwater pond fish available. Naturalised in parts of Western Europe, it is extremely cold-hardy and thrives in Belgian and Dutch garden ponds. Semi-aggressive — may harass smaller fish but does well in ponds with robust companions. Note: release into natural waterways is prohibited under EU invasive species regulations.
Minimum 500 L garden pond with plant cover and rocky shelters. pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–20, KH 2–10, temperature 4–24°C. Feed sinking pellets and live/frozen foods: earthworms, bloodworm, krill. Semi-aggressive; keep with robust fish of similar size. Never release into natural waterways (EU IAS Regulation). Extremely cold-hardy; tolerates freezing winters.
