Crenicichla punctata
Also known as: Punctata Pike Cichlid, Spotted Pike Cichlid, Plata Spotted Pike Cichlid
Origin: Río de la Plata drainage, Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguay/southern Brazil
Crenicichla punctata is a widely distributed pike cichlid of the Río de la Plata drainage, found in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. It is a classic, long-established aquarium species with a clean and handsome appearance: neat rows of dark punctate spots adorning a silver-grey body, with a bold caudal ocellus and a well-defined dorsal fin pattern.
As a Plata-basin species C. punctata is adapted to relatively cool, moderately hard, neutral to slightly alkaline water — the opposite of Amazonian Crenicichla requirements. Temperatures of 18–26°C suit it well, and it does not require any special water preparation for most European aquarists. This makes it one of the most practically accessible Crenicichla in the hobby.
At 25 cm it needs a 300 L species tank. C. punctata has a long history in captivity and is one of the more regularly bred pike cichlids in Europe. It is an excellent choice for cichlid keepers wanting a larger, temperate-zone predatory cichlid without demanding water chemistry requirements.
Water: pH 6.0–7.8 at 18–26°C; moderate hardness (up to 18 dGH) fine; one of the easiest Crenicichla to keep. Tank: 300 L with sandy substrate, smooth rocks, and driftwood cave structures. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and large cichlid pellets; a reliable and easy feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner; regularly bred; biparental care; among the most proven captive Crenicichla. Compatibility: Plata biotope with large robust cichlids; bonded pairs ideal.
