About

Gastromyzon punctulatus is characterised by a dense covering of small, evenly distributed dark spots across its dorsal surface on a pale tan to warm brown background. It is native to the hill streams of Borneo, where it occurs alongside other Gastromyzon species in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated, clear water over smooth gravel and bedrock. The species is relatively small even for the genus, reaching around 5 cm, and is somewhat less frequently offered in the trade than G. borneensis or G. zebrinus.

In the aquarium, G. punctulatus is an industrious grazer that rarely rests, working its way methodically across every available surface. It is compatible with other hillstream species of similar size and temperament. Groups of three or more are preferable to single specimens, which may become shy and reclusive.

This species has moderate water quality demands but should not be pushed beyond its tolerance: nitrates above 20 ppm and temperatures above 26 °C will cause visible deterioration in condition. Weekly water changes of 30–40% are the single most important maintenance task for this species.

Care Guide

Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, GH 3–12, KH 1–6; high flow and excellent oxygenation; keep nitrates below 20 ppm with regular water changes. Tank: 70 L minimum; smooth pebbles and rounded boulders with flat grazing surfaces; strong directional flow from powerhead or circulation pump. Feeding: Biofilm, diatoms, and green algae; supplement with spirulina wafers, blanched greens, and Repashy algae gel foods. Breeding: Eggs deposited under flat stones; condition adults with water changes and slight cooling; fry require biofilm and infusoria. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly sized hillstream species; not suited to warm, sluggish community tanks.
