Pundamilia azurea
Also known as: Azure Pundamilia, Blue Pundamilia
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia azurea is a striking Victorian cichlid in which sexually mature males develop a near-uniform metallic azure blue colouration covering the entire body and all fins. Unlike the red-flanked nyererei, azurea's appeal lies in the purity of its blue, which intensifies under good aquarium lighting and during breeding activity. Females are typically silver-grey with faint barring, providing a strong visual contrast to the males.
Found along rocky shores, Pundamilia azurea shares the rocky-shore habitat preference of its congeners and should be given abundant rockwork in the aquarium. It is a maternal mouthbrooder with breeding behaviour typical of the genus — males court females vigorously, and females are best provided with hiding spots away from male attention between spawning events.
Pundamilia azurea can be mixed with other Victorian haplochromines that differ visually, minimising hybridisation risk. As with all Victorian cichlids, avoiding cross-breeding is strongly recommended to preserve the genetic integrity of each species.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard; weekly 25-30% changes. Tank: 150L minimum; rocky décor with caves and clear territory boundaries. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, mysis, brine shrimp, spirulina; varied diet maintains colour. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds fry ~3 weeks; separate post-release. Compatibility: Can mix with visually dissimilar Victorian species; never hybridise.
