Pundamilia igneopinnis
Also known as: Fire-Fin Pundamilia, Igneopinnis Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia igneopinnis is one of the lesser-known members of the Pundamilia genus, distinguished by the striking red coloration of the dorsal fin in adult males, which contrasts brilliantly against a metallic blue-silver body. The species name 'igneopinnis' directly references this feature, meaning fire-finned. It is found along rocky shorelines in the Tanzanian portion of Lake Victoria and is rarely exported in large numbers, lending it a degree of rarity in the hobby.
Care requirements closely mirror those of P. nyererei. Males are territorial and should be kept with multiple females to diffuse aggression. A well-structured aquarium with multiple rock territories and clear visual breaks between them is essential. The species breeds readily once established, with females brooding clutches of 10 to 20 eggs for approximately three weeks.
This species is best reserved for aquarists with prior Victorian cichlid experience. Its relative rarity also makes it a worthwhile candidate for captive breeding programs aimed at maintaining genetic diversity in cultured Victorian cichlid stocks.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard alkaline; regular partial water changes mandatory. Tank: 150L+; dense rockwork with multiple territories; minimal open water. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, mysis shrimp; avoid high-fat foods. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; brood size 10-20; hold period ~3 weeks. Compatibility: Victorian species tank; one male unless 250L+; do not mix with mbuna.
