Pundamilia sp. 'Python Island'
Also known as: Python Island Pundamilia
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia sp. 'Python Island' is an undescribed species collected from Python Island in the Speke Gulf, Tanzania, and is morphologically and genetically distinct from P. nyererei despite occupying the same island. Males display a bold yellow-to-red gradient across the flanks with a somewhat deeper, more laterally compressed body than typical nyererei, suggesting an independent evolutionary trajectory within the same habitat.
This species is considered a specialist's fish and is rarely encountered outside of dedicated Victorian cichlid hobbyist circles. Care requirements mirror those of other Pundamilia — rocky aquariums, alkaline hard water, and a harem-style keeping arrangement are all recommended. Mixing this species with P. nyererei 'Python Island' is strongly inadvisable due to hybridisation risk.
The hobbyist keeping this species takes on an informal conservation role, as wild populations of many Lake Victoria cichlids are under pressure from introduced Nile Perch, eutrophication, and sedimentation.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; regular water changes non-negotiable. Tank: 150L+; ample rockwork; keep only one male unless tank is 300L+. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, spirulina, frozen invertebrates; small meals twice daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; do not mix with P. nyererei 'Python Island' to prevent hybridisation. Compatibility: Victorian species tank with visually and taxonomically distinct tankmates only.
