Puntius puntio
Also known as: Puntio Barb, Spot Barb, Bengal Barb
Origin: Bengal, Assam, India
Puntius puntio is a common and widespread barb across Bengal and Assam in India, inhabiting ponds, rice paddies, ox-bow lakes, and slow-moving streams. It has a silvery-gold body with faint lateral markings and subtle orange tints in the fins of mature males. While lacking the vivid colouration of showier species, it compensates with energetic schooling behaviour and a thoroughly easy care profile.
In the aquarium P. puntio is one of the most beginner-friendly of the Indian barbs. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions, accepts virtually any food, and remains peaceful with all non-predatory tankmates. It is particularly effective as a dither fish in biotope setups, encouraging shyer species to emerge from cover.
Breeding is prolific and undemanding. Pairs or groups scatter adhesive eggs over fine vegetation, and fry appear within two days. Raising the fry requires only standard micro-foods in the first week before transitioning to crushed flake.
Water: 20–27 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; tolerates a wide range. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted with some open space; dark substrate enhances colour. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts flake, pellets, and most live/frozen foods readily. Breeding: Prolific scatter-spawner; no parental care; fry easy to raise on micro-foods. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; mixes with danios, rasboras, and small gouramis.
