Betta splendens
Also known as: Purple Betta, Violet Betta, Lavender Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Purple bettas are produced by combining specific red, blue, and iridescent cell genetics to create a violet or lilac tone. True purples are difficult to achieve and maintain across generations. The colour ranges from a deep, dark violet to a softer lavender depending on lighting and the individual fish's genetics.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — UV-enhanced lighting brings out the violet tones. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; the purple colouration is most vivid against green plants and dark substrate. Feeding: carnivore — high-quality betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; twice daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to own species — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; a rare and prized addition to any collection.
