Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Purple Moscow Guppy, Moscow Purple Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Eastern Europe lineage)
The Purple Moscow Guppy is among the rarest and most coveted fancy guppy strains, developed through intensive selective breeding programs focused on achieving a true violet-purple body colouration. Males at full expression display a deep, metallic purple from snout to tail with minimal breaks in the colour field.
This strain demands slightly more careful husbandry than simpler guppy varieties — hard, warm, stable water is essential to bring out and maintain its purple iridescence. Males may take up to five months to reach full colour maturity.
Best appreciated in a species or single-strain display tank under bright lighting that allows the purple iridescence to fully express.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, hard water (GH 12–20) essential for full colour expression. Tank: 60 L minimum; bright lighting recommended; well-planted with open swimming space. Feeding: High-quality colour-enhancing flake; regular live or frozen Daphnia and Artemia feedings. Breeding: Keep strain pure by isolating; 1 male to 2–3 females; cull deformed fry promptly. Compatibility: Peaceful; best in species tank or with very small, passive fish.
