Nannostomus rubrocaudatus
Also known as: Purple Pencilfish, Redtail Pencilfish
Origin: Peru (upper Amazon blackwater tributaries)
Nannostomus rubrocaudatus, the Purple Pencilfish, hails from blackwater tributaries of the upper Amazon in Peru. Its reddish-purple ventral colouring and vivid crimson tail base are highly distinctive. Like the Coral Red Pencilfish, it demands very soft, acidic blackwater conditions and rewards dedicated care with spectacular colour that rivals any small freshwater fish in the hobby.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft blackwater is essential; use RO water with catappa leaves. Tank: 40 L minimum; blackwater biotope with dark substrate, tannins and minimal current. Feeding: Baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, small live invertebrates and high-quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful; males compete with fin displays; keep more females than males in groups of 6+. Compatibility: Best with other blackwater nano species only.
