Origin: Northern Australia, New Guinea
Mogurnda mogurnda is widely distributed across northern Australia and southern New Guinea in a variety of freshwater habitats including rivers, billabongs, and floodplains. Males are more intensely coloured and become highly territorial during breeding season, displaying prominent purple-blue stripes and erecting their fins aggressively. It is a cavity spawner that guards its eggs diligently.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard freshwater to very mild brackish. Tank: 100 L minimum per pair; provide caves, rocks, and plant cover for territory establishment. Feeding: Carnivorous; frozen bloodworm, earthworms, shrimp, and meaty pellets. Behaviour: Males are territorial; breeding pairs defend caves aggressively; keep pairs separately. Compatibility: Pairs best kept with robust, similarly-sized fish; will eat small fish and shrimp.
