Zebrasoma xanthurum
Origin: Red Sea, Gulf of Aden
The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is one of the most prized and regal tang species, with a deep royal-purple body that contrasts strikingly with a brilliant yellow tail and bright blue facial markings. An endemic of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, it is a hardy and long-lived fish that adapts well to aquarium life compared to other tangs. It can be territorial toward other Zebrasoma species and should be introduced carefully into established reef systems.
Minimum 300 L with open swimming areas. pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 24–27°C. Feed dried nori daily, spirulina, and high-quality frozen herbivore preparations. One per tank unless very large system; will fight with other Zebrasoma. Introduce alongside or before other tangs. Reef-safe; does not bother corals or inverts. Regular algae grazing behaviour helps control nuisance growth.
