Tetraodon pustulatus
Also known as: Pustulate Puffer, West African Puffer, Knobby Puffer
Origin: West Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon river systems)
Tetraodon pustulatus originates from river systems of Nigeria and Cameroon and is distinguished by small pustule-like tubercles scattered across its body surface, giving it an unusually rough texture compared to other medium-sized puffers. It is a robust carnivore that will attack and crush hard-shelled invertebrates with ease, requiring regular snail or mussel offerings to keep its fused beak from overgrowing. Water must be clean and well-oxygenated. A sand substrate with driftwood and dense planting around the tank perimeter provides the cover this species seeks during daylight hours. It is intolerant of conspecifics and will readily bite tankmates. Experience keeping aggressive freshwater oddballs is strongly recommended before acquiring this species.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, soft to moderately hard; highly sensitive to ammonia and nitrite. Tank: 150 L minimum; sandy substrate, driftwood caves, robust or artificial plants; powerful filtration. Feeding: Snails, mussels, cockles, earthworms, frozen shrimp; variety essential; hard items weekly for beak maintenance. Breeding: No documented captive breeding; presumed seasonal spawner tied to West African dry/wet season cycle. Compatibility: Solitary only; extremely aggressive; do not combine with any other species.
