Schistura quasimodo
Also known as: Quasimodo Stream Loach, Hump-backed Schistura
Origin: Laos
Schistura quasimodo is one of the most morphologically unusual loaches in the world, characterised by a pronounced dorsal hump immediately behind the head that gives it an unmistakable silhouette. Described from rivers in Laos, it represents one of the more remarkable examples of adaptive morphology within the Nemacheilidae family. Its distinctive shape, combined with genuine rarity in the hobby, makes it a coveted species among specialist loach collectors.
Despite its unusual shape, Schistura quasimodo has similar husbandry requirements to other Schistura: well-oxygenated water with moderate current, fine-to-mixed substrate, and rock-cave hides. It is peaceful and integrates well into stream biotope aquaria. Groups of five or more are recommended to reduce individual stress and encourage natural interaction.
Feeding consists of micro sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live foods. The Quasimodo Stream Loach is a genuine conversation piece in any loach collection, combining an extraordinary appearance with relatively manageable care requirements.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 20–26°C, well-oxygenated, moderate flow. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand and pebbles, flat rock caves; avoid sharp décor. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, small live foods. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with other stream fish; good in mixed stream biotope setups.
