Cherax quadricarinatus
Also known as: Queensland Lobster Juvenile, Young Redclaw Crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus Juvenile
Origin: Northern Australia (captive bred)
Juvenile Cherax quadricarinatus Queensland Lobster Crayfish at 4–6 cm already display the early stages of the species' signature colouring — the beginnings of the red claw patch on males, and the blue-green iridescence of the carapace that deepens with age. At this size, they are active, hardy, and fast-growing, making them an exciting species to grow out from juvenile stock.
C. quadricarinatus is one of the fastest-growing freshwater crayfish available in the hobby, capable of reaching adult size within 12–18 months under optimal conditions with abundant high-quality food and warm water. Juveniles require significantly more protein in their diet than adults to support rapid growth, and high-protein sinking pellets should form the backbone of their diet.
A tank upgrade schedule must be planned before purchasing — juveniles will outgrow a 120 L setup within their first year and ultimately require a tank of 200 L or more as adults. Their fast growth and impressive final size make them one of the most rewarding large crayfish to raise from juvenile.
Water: 22–30°C, pH 7.0–8.5, GH 8–20, KH 3–12; warm, well-oxygenated water; high protein diet for growth. Tank: minimum 120 L juvenile, upgrade to 200 L adult; large caves, strong filtration. Feeding: high-protein sinking pellets, vegetables, frozen shrimp, occasional fish; feed daily for growth. Breeding: not applicable at juvenile stage; male claw patch develops at around 10 cm. Compatibility: juvenile can share with large robust fish; solo tank recommended as it approaches adult size.
