Moema quiii
Also known as: Quii Killifish, Moema Killifish
Origin: Upper Amazon basin, Bolivia, Brazil
Moema quiii is a rare annual killifish from the upper Amazon basin of Bolivia and Brazil, inhabiting temporary pools and flooded savannahs that dry seasonally. Males are visually spectacular — they develop vivid blue and orange colouration across the body with elongated, sail-like dorsal and caudal fins that are displayed during courtship and male–male interactions. The species is one of the larger and more dramatic annual killifish from South America.
As an annual killifish, M. quiii requires a dedicated species tank with peat substrate for egg deposition. Soft, acidic water is essential. Eggs require a mandatory diapause of 10–14 weeks stored in slightly moist peat before re-wetting. Males are territorial and should be kept one per tank with several females. The species is sensitive to water quality and requires consistent maintenance.
Moema quiii is a true specialist's fish — its rarity, demanding water chemistry requirements, and spectacular appearance make it a prestigious addition to a serious killifish collection. Captive breeding is critical to maintaining the species in the hobby.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water (GH 1–6) — use RO or rain water. Tank: 60 L species tank with deep peat substrate (5–7 cm) for natural egg burying. Feeding: Live and frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and small invertebrates; feed daily. Breeding: Harvest peat every 3–4 weeks; store eggs in moist peat for 10–14 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank only; males are intolerant of each other.
