Nothobranchius rachowi
Also known as: Rachow's Nothobranch, Rachow's Killifish
Origin: Coastal Tanzania
Nothobranchius rachowi is a small annual killifish native to temporary pools and floodplains in coastal Tanzania. Males are renowned for their extraordinary colouration — a dense mosaic of red and turquoise-blue scales that makes them one of the most coveted Nothobranchius in the hobby. Like all annual killifish, they complete their entire life cycle before seasonal pools dry up, and eggs can be stored in moist peat through a dry period.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 30 L species tank with peat substrate for egg deposition; tight-fitting lid essential. Feeding: Live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia, micro worms, and small insects; feed daily. Behaviour: Males are highly territorial; keep one male with two or three females. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; avoid any fin-nipping or boisterous fish.
