Etheostoma caeruleum
Also known as: Rainbow Darter, Rainbow Perch
Origin: North America (Midwestern USA)
The Rainbow Darter is native to clean, fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Midwestern United States. Breeding males are among the most vividly coloured freshwater fish in North America, displaying alternating bands of electric blue-green and burnt orange that can match many tropical species.
As a darter it does not swim in open water but instead rests on and darts between rocks and gravel, holding position in current using its pectoral fins. An aquarium with a powerhead creating directional flow, coarse gravel or smooth stones, and low water temperature suits it perfectly.
Diet must be live or frozen invertebrates; Rainbow Darters rarely accept dry food. Their specialised habitat requirements and carnivorous diet raise them to intermediate difficulty.
Water: 10–20°C, pH 7.0–8.2, GH 8–18; high oxygenation, moderate to strong current essential. Tank: minimum 80 L, smooth stones and coarse gravel substrate, powerhead for directional flow. Feeding: carnivore — live/frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, small earthworms; dry food usually refused. Breeding: spawns in gravel riffles in spring; male guards territory; rarely bred in home aquaria. Compatibility: semi-aggressive with own species; peaceful with other darters of similar size.
