Poecilia reticulata
Also known as: Rainbow Guppy, Fancy Guppy Female
Origin: Poecilia reticulata — native to Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana, Barbados; widely introduced globally
Female Poecilia reticulata — Rainbow Guppy Females — are the essential reproductive half of the fancy guppy world. While considerably less showy than males, females play the primary role in determining the reproductive success and fry survival of guppy colonies. They are larger than males (5–6 cm versus 3–4 cm for males), more robust in body form, and display the characteristic plump, rounded abdomen typical of livebearing females.
Females of many fancy strains display subtle but attractive patterns — pale body tones with faint scale iridescence, occasional light coloring in the fins, and the characteristic gravid spot (dark area near the anal fin) that darkens as pregnancy progresses. Some rainbow strain females display significantly more color than wild-type females.
Female guppies can store sperm for several months after a single mating, enabling them to produce multiple broods without a male present — an important consideration when purchasing females that may already be gravid. Gestation is 4–6 weeks, with brood sizes of 20–100+ fry depending on the female's size and condition.
Maintaining healthy female guppies requires protecting them from excessive male attention. The stress of constant male harassment can cause females to abort broods, lose condition, and develop health problems.
Rainbow Guppy Females share the care requirements of all fancy guppies: pH 6.8–8.5, hardness 8–25 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. They are adaptable, hardy fish that tolerate a range of conditions. Slightly hard, alkaline water with a small amount of aquarium salt is ideal.
A minimum 40-liter aquarium with dense plantings (Guppy Grass, Hornwort, Java moss, floating Salvinia) provides essential cover and fry refuge. Sponge filtration prevents fry loss. Dense planting allows fry to hide from adult fish, naturally raising a portion of each brood.
Feed quality flake food, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina, and vegetable-based foods. A varied diet maintains condition, coloration, and reproductive health.
Female guppies are peaceful with all community species. Compatible with corydoras, small tetras, small rasboras, mollies, platies, and other peaceful community fish. When keeping with males, maintain at least 2–3 females per male to distribute breeding pressure.
A female-only tank is also an option for displaying only females without the reproductive stress of male presence. Water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality.
