About

Pelvicachromis taeniatus is a dwarf cichlid from the coastal river systems of Nigeria and Cameroon, with multiple geographic variants showing different color intensities and patterns. The 'Nigeria Red' population is particularly highly regarded for its exceptional male coloration: vivid red flanks, iridescent green and gold scale highlights, and bright dorsal and ventral fin patterns.

Females of P. taeniatus 'Nigeria Red' are arguably more spectacular than females of many other dwarf cichlid species: they develop an intensely purple-violet to magenta belly patch during breeding condition that contrasts brilliantly with the base body coloration. In many Pelvicachromis species, females are more brightly colored than males during spawning — a reversal of the typical pattern.

Pelvicachromis taeniatus shares the cave-spawning behavior of its relative the Kribensis (P. pulcher): pairs select small caves, coconut shells, or similar structures for spawning, and both parents provide intensive biparental brood care. The species forms devoted monogamous pairs.

Rainbow Kribs are slightly more sensitive to water parameters than the hardier Kribensis, preferring softer, slightly acidic water that reflects their West African forest river habitat. In appropriate conditions, they are rewarding, long-lived dwarf cichlids.

Care Guide

Rainbow Kribs prefer soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water: pH 5.5–7.0, hardness 2–10 dGH, and temperatures 23–27°C. Softer, more acidic water closer to their natural habitat produces the most vivid coloration, particularly the female's purple belly patch, and encourages breeding.

A minimum 80-liter planted aquarium suits a pair. Provide small caves (coconut halves, ceramic caves, PVC tubes with small openings), dense plant cover, driftwood, fine sand substrate, and subdued lighting. Multiple caves allow territory establishment and female choice of spawning site.

Feed quality dwarf cichlid micro pellets, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, small bloodworms, cyclops, and small earthworms. Varied protein-rich diet maintains intense coloration and breeding condition.

Rainbow Kribs are peaceful with non-threatening community species but become assertive during breeding. Compatible with small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other peaceful fish that will not directly challenge the pair's territory. Avoid keeping with other Pelvicachromis or similar-looking bottom-dwellers.

During spawning, the pair aggressively defends the cave and immediate surrounding territory. Provide a large enough tank for other inhabitants to maintain safe distance. Water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality.
