About

Coenobita violascens, commonly called the Rainbow or Viola Land Hermit Crab, is native to the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Pacific islands. It is celebrated for its variable and often spectacular body colouration — ranging from deep violet and cobalt blue to red, orange, and cream — with different individuals expressing different combinations of these tones, earning its 'rainbow' trade designation.

Like all coenobitids, C. violascens requires a terrestrial setup with deep moist burrowing substrate, high humidity, access to both fresh dechlorinated water and marine saltwater, and a generous selection of appropriately sized empty shells. The marine saltwater access is non-negotiable for osmoregulation and gill health.

This species is moderately active and social, doing well in groups of three or more individuals. It is one of the medium-sized coenobitid species, with adults fitting shells up to approximately 5–6 cm aperture. Diet should be as varied as possible, including dried fruits, shrimp, algae, and organic matter. C. violascens is considered one of the more rewarding and visually distinctive land hermit crabs in the hobby.

Care Guide

Water: 24–30°C; fresh dechlorinated water and marine saltwater dishes both required; both deep enough to bathe in. Tank: minimum 60 L terrarium; deep moist sand substrate; 75–85% humidity; climbing décor; abundant shell selection. Feeding: omnivore — dried fruit, shrimp, algae, coconut, leafy greens, cuttlebone; varied daily diet essential. Breeding: pelagic larvae require open ocean; captive breeding not possible. Compatibility: social; groups of 3 or more; do not mix species; provide varied shell sizes including empty natural shells.
