Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Rainbow Platy, Multicolour Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Rainbow Platy is a captive strain in which multiple colour genes are expressed simultaneously, producing fish with a body that transitions between orange, red, yellow, and sometimes blue or green tones along the flanks. No two Rainbow Platies look exactly alike, and the colour distribution shifts as the fish ages and its condition fluctuates.
This variety is particularly popular in community aquariums where a colourful but easy-care livebearer is desired without committing to a single solid colour. A group of Rainbow Platies together produces a constantly shifting palette of warm colours.
Care requirements are identical to other platy varieties — hard, slightly alkaline water and a varied omnivore diet.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; colour intensifies in optimal conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; bright lighting best displays the multicolour pattern; plants and open areas. Feeding: Varied diet; colour-enhancing foods help maintain the multicolour expression. Breeding: Prolific; fry show colour variety; offspring colour distribution unpredictable. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; peaceful with virtually all non-aggressive species.
