About

The Rainbow Shiner (Notropis chrosomus) is one of North America's most colorful native minnows, native to the Tennessee River drainage and neighboring highland streams of Alabama and Georgia. Males in breeding condition display an extraordinary combination of rose-pink to red fins, electric blue flanks, and golden highlights that rival any tropical species. Females are more subdued but still attractive with their silvery-blue sheen.

In the aquarium, Rainbow Shiners are active schooling fish that do best in groups of six or more. They prefer cool, highly oxygenated water with moderate to strong current, making them ideal for temperate or unheated aquariums in cooler climates. A sandy substrate with smooth rocks and robust plants replicates their native highland stream habitat.

These fish are peaceful community fish compatible with other cool-water species. Their dramatic seasonal color changes—peaking during spring spawning—make them one of the most rewarding native species to keep. They are egg scatterers that will spawn over gravel and fine-leafed plants in the right conditions.

Rainbow Shiners accept a wide range of prepared foods and are undemanding in terms of diet. Their primary requirement is cool water (ideally below 22°C) and excellent oxygenation, which can be achieved with a powerhead or spray bar return.

Care Guide

Water Parameters: Keep Rainbow Shiners in cool water between 15–22°C; they struggle above 24°C. pH should be neutral to slightly alkaline (6.8–7.8), with moderate hardness (GH 8–18). Excellent oxygenation is essential—use a spray bar, powerhead, or air stones to maintain high dissolved oxygen levels.

Tank Setup: A 75-liter or larger aquarium with strong filtration and current suits this active schooling species. Use a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with smooth river rocks and robust plants like Vallisneria or Anubias. Open swimming space in the midwater is appreciated. Dim lighting or floating plants help showcase their colors.

Feeding: Rainbow Shiners are omnivores that accept high-quality flake food, small pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Feed small amounts twice daily. Variety in the diet enhances their natural coloration, particularly during breeding season.

Tankmates: Compatible with other cool-water peaceful fish such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows, dace, and temperate gudgeons. Avoid tropical species requiring warm water. Keep in groups of 6+ for natural schooling behavior and to trigger breeding coloration in males.

Health: Rainbow Shiners are hardy when kept in appropriate cool conditions. Warm water is the primary stress factor and quickly leads to immune suppression. Watch for white spot (ich) and fin rot, which can occur if temperatures fluctuate. Maintain stable, cool, well-oxygenated conditions for long-term success.
