Amblygobius rainfordi
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Coral Sea
Rainford's Goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) is a beautifully patterned sand-sifter with alternating horizontal stripes of orange-red and blue-green, making it one of the more colourful goby sand-sifters. It methodically sifts mouthfuls of sand substrate to extract benthic invertebrates and detritus, helping to maintain a healthy, oxygenated sandbed. A well-established, mature reef with abundant microfauna is essential for long-term care of this species.
Minimum 80 L mature reef with open sand areas (fine substrate, 5+ cm deep). pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 24–28°C. Supplement diet with frozen mysis and copepods if sandbed microfauna is insufficient. Peaceful; may be bullied by aggressive fish. Does not pair with pistol shrimp. Reef-safe. Mortality risk in tanks with insufficient live sandbed fauna.
