Betta raja
Also known as: Raja Betta, Rajah Betta
Origin: Borneo
Betta raja is a rare mouthbrooding wild Betta endemic to the peat swamp forests of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Males in breeding condition develop brilliant blue and red iridescent colouration. It requires very soft, acidic blackwater conditions and is a sensitive species best suited to specialist breeders with experience of wild bettas.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 4.0–6.5, very soft, tannin-stained water. Tank: minimum 60L; heavily planted blackwater setup with leaf litter and tight-fitting lid. Feeding: carnivore — live invertebrates strongly preferred; frozen bloodworm and daphnia accepted. Behaviour: peaceful; males mouthbrood; territorial only during courtship. Compatibility: suitable with other small blackwater species; avoid hard-water community fish.
