Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: Gold Ram, Golden Ram Cichlid
Origin: Captive-bred (base: Venezuela, Colombia)
The gold morph of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi was developed through selective breeding to replace the natural blue-grey and yellow body with a warm golden-yellow base colouration. It retains the species' signature jet-black dorsal blotch, iridescent blue scaling on the flanks, and red dorsal fin markings. Like all M. ramirezi forms, it requires warm, soft, slightly acidic water for optimal health and longevity — captive strains are still sensitive to cool temperatures and elevated nitrates. A cave spawner with biparental brood care, pairs bond strongly and defend a small territory. Best maintained in pairs or small harems in well-planted aquaria with fine substrate and some tannin-staining. Feed a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrates and high-quality prepared foods.
Water: Soft; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 27–30 °C, clean water essential. Tank: 60 L+; fine sand, plants, shelter spots. Feeding: Fine sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, artemia, cyclops, bloodworm. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; parents may eat first clutch. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with small, peaceful tetras and catfish.
