Planorbella duryi
Also known as: Red Ramshorn Snail, Red Ramshorn
Origin: Americas (selectively bred)
The Red Ramshorn is a selectively bred freshwater snail with a striking crimson body and coiled, flat shell. It grazes constantly on algae, soft decaying plant matter, and biofilm, making it a valuable member of any cleanup crew. It reproduces readily in captivity and does best in tanks with stable, calcium-supplemented water.
Water: 18–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0; calcium supplementation important for shell integrity. Tank: Minimum 20L with any substrate; thrives in planted tanks with ample algae and leaf litter. Feeding: Algae, decaying vegetation, biofilm, and blanched vegetables; not known to damage healthy plants. Behaviour: Active day and night; will graze on glass, décor, and plant leaves without damaging live tissue. Compatibility: Peaceful with all fish and invertebrates; do not house with assassin snails or pufferfish.
