Carassius auratus
Origin: Captive bred
The Ranchu is often called the King of Goldfish in Japan, featuring a deeply curved back, no dorsal fin, and a characteristic downward-pointing head. This red-and-white variety displays excellent body conformation and a well-developed wen. Shallow tanks or outdoor tubs provide the optimal top-down viewing angle to appreciate the Ranchu's distinctive body profile. One of the most highly regarded and selectively bred goldfish varieties worldwide.
Minimum 150 L with gentle filtration. pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 3–8, temperature 10–22°C. Shallow tanks (30–40 cm depth) preferred for optimal top-down appreciation of body form. Feed sinking pellets and gel food. Keep with other fancy goldfish only. 25% weekly water changes. Monitor for swim bladder issues — compressed body prone to buoyancy problems.
