Pseudopimelodus raninus
Also known as: Raninus Toadcat, Toad Catfish
Origin: Amazon basin
Pseudopimelodus raninus closely resembles P. bufonius in body form and ecology and inhabits Amazonian river systems across northern Brazil and the Guianas. Its mottled pattern of brown, cream, and grey blotches provides near-perfect camouflage among leaf litter and rocky substrate.
Like all Pseudopimelodus, this species is a true ambush predator that relies on patience rather than speed, waiting motionless until prey approaches before engulfing it with a rapid strike. In captivity it is secretive but hardy, adapting well to cave decorations and subdued light.
The Raninus Toadcat rarely exceeds 20 cm, making it one of the more aquarium-friendly pseudo-pimelodids. It is compatible with medium-large fish that it cannot swallow and presents no threat to robust, larger tankmates.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; stable, clean water. Tank: Minimum 200L; provide caves, smooth rocks, and leaf litter; dim lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; sinking pellets, frozen meaty foods, small whole prawns; nocturnal feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner; seldom bred in captivity. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; avoid very small fish; good with medium robust species.
