Pygocentrus nattereri
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Pygocentrus nattereri, the Red-Bellied Piranha, is the most famous freshwater fish in the world. Contrary to their fearsome reputation, piranhas are actually timid, shoaling fish that spend most of their time hiding in groups. In captivity they need large schools of 6+ to feel secure; solitary piranhas are permanently stressed. Their vivid red-orange bellies and silver flanks are genuinely beautiful. Strictly legal to keep in Belgium with a proper permit. Requires expert care and specialised tank setup.
Groups of 6+ essential — solitary piranhas are stressed and unhealthy. 400+ L for a group. Temperature 24–28 °C. Feed raw fish pieces, prawns, and meaty sinking pellets. Low lighting and lots of wood and plant cover. Secure lid. Legal to keep in Belgium with permit — check local regulations.
