Betta rubra
Origin: North Sumatra, Indonesia (Alas River valley)
Betta rubra is a rare and strikingly colourful mouthbrooding betta endemic to the Alas River valley in North Sumatra, inhabiting shaded blackwater streams. Males are predominantly deep red with iridescent blue-green scale centres, making them one of the most sought-after wild bettas in the hobby. Due to its restricted range and vulnerability to habitat change, captive breeding programmes are important for continued availability. A mouthbrooder — breeding behaviour differs significantly from bubblenesting bettas.
Minimum 40 L species tank with tannin-stained soft, acidic water. pH 4.5–6.5, GH 1–6, KH 0–2, temperature 20–26°C. Feed varied live and frozen carnivore foods: daphnia, bloodworm, small earthworms, baby brine shrimp. Can be kept in pairs — mouthbrooding male may be territorial; provide dense vegetation. Source only from captive-bred specimens to support conservation.
