Laetacara dorsigera
Also known as: Red-breast Smiling Acara, Red-breasted Dwarf Cichlid, Dorsigera Smiling Acara
Origin: Brazil
Laetacara dorsigera is one of the most endearing small cichlids in the South American hobby, combining the genus' distinctive downturned 'smiling' mouth line with a beautiful crimson-red breast flush that becomes especially vivid in breeding condition. Native to the Paraguay-Paraná basin of southern Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina, it is one of the southernmost Laetacara species.
This species is notably hardy and tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, reflecting its southern distribution where seasonal temperature and chemistry fluctuations are more pronounced than in the stable Amazonian environment. It is peaceful enough for a general community aquarium yet has enough personality to be the clear centerpiece of a smaller tank.
L. dorsigera is a cave spawner with charming biparental care behavior — both parents actively defend and herd the fry, making it a pleasure to observe through a full breeding cycle. It is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking for a small, beautiful, community-compatible cichlid.
Water: Flexible — pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–27°C; tolerates moderate hardness. Tank: 80 L with caves, plants, and open sandy areas; pairs well with a variety of South American tankmates. Feeding: Omnivore — pellets, flakes, frozen invertebrates, and occasional vegetable matter. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; relatively easy to breed. Compatibility: Excellent community cichlid; peaceful with small tetras, Corydoras, and similar species.
