Cherax quadricarinatus
Also known as: Red Claw Crayfish, Australian Red Claw
Origin: Northern Australia / New Guinea
Cherax quadricarinatus, the Red Claw Crayfish, is one of the most commercially significant and visually impressive freshwater crayfish species. Males develop vivid red patches on the outer margins of their large chelipeds against a blue-green body, creating a striking two-tone display. It grows large and requires substantial space, robust filtration, and a tank devoid of small tank mates it could predate. A truly remarkable display invertebrate.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 4–10; good filtration for large waste output. Tank: minimum 120 L, multiple large caves and shelter; secure lid as it may climb. Feeding: sinking pellets, fresh vegetables, frozen foods; varied omnivorous diet. Behaviour: territorial; will predate fish and invertebrates; digs and rearranges décor. Compatibility: species-only or with very large, fast fish; not plant or community safe.
