Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Red Cobra Guppy, Cobra Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Trinidad)
The Red Cobra Guppy is a selectively bred strain of Poecilia reticulata prized for its intense red base colour combined with a striking black snakeskin reticulation across the body and fins. Males display a large ornate delta or fan tail that accentuates the cobra pattern to dramatic effect.
Like all fancy guppies, the Red Cobra thrives in warm, hard, slightly alkaline water and is one of the most forgiving fish for beginners. Regular water changes and a varied diet will keep colours vivid and health robust.
Males should be kept with multiple females to distribute breeding attention, and the species does best in a well-planted aquarium that provides cover for fry and females.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard to hard (GH 8–20). Tank: 60 L minimum; densely planted with floating cover to protect fry; tight lid essential. Feeding: High-quality flake, micro-pellets, live or frozen Daphnia and Artemia; feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Prolific livebearer; females drop 20–50 fry every 4–6 weeks; remove fry or provide heavy planting. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs.
