Amphilophus labiatus
Also known as: Red Devil Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Amphilophus labiatus is endemic to Lake Managua in Nicaragua and is characterised by its distinctive thick, fleshy lips that are a natural adaptation for extracting invertebrates from rocky substrates. Adults are typically vivid red-orange, though dark grey and partially coloured individuals also occur. Like the closely related Midas Cichlid, it is highly aggressive, intelligent, and interactive — but demands expert-level care and very large tanks.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 500L+ for adults; minimal decor; extremely powerful filtration for large bioload. Feeding: Omnivore; large pellets, earthworms, large prawns, and meaty frozen foods. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive; highly territorial; will attack anything including its keeper's hand. Compatibility: Species-only; may be kept as a proven pair with extreme caution and ample space.
