Protomelas taeniolatus
Also known as: Red Empress, Super Red Empress
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Protomelas taeniolatus, the Red Empress, is a mid-sized haplochromine cichlid widespread throughout Lake Malawi. Dominant males develop extraordinary colouration — brilliant red-orange on the upper body and dorsal fin against an electric blue lower body and head. It is adaptable, moderately hardy, and is one of the most recommended species for intermediate Malawi keepers.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; regular water changes to maintain quality. Tank: 250L minimum; rock formations around the perimeter with open centre swimming. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, krill, spirulina-based foods for intense colouration. Behaviour: Moderately territorial; single males do best in a harem of 3+ females. Compatibility: Compatible with most Malawi haps; handle with some care around smaller fish.
