Carinotetraodon irrubesco
Also known as: Red-eye Puffer, Irrubesco Puffer
Origin: Borneo and Sumatra, Indonesia
Carinotetraodon irrubesco inhabits the slow-moving, often tannin-stained rivers and flooded forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name refers to its intense red eyes, which contrast with the mottled brown-green dorsal surface and cream ventral colouration. Like other dwarf puffers, it requires hard-shelled foods to keep its ever-growing beak worn down.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; tannin-rich water is appreciated. Tank: Minimum 40 L; dense vegetation and hiding spots reduce inter-specimen aggression. Feeding: Small snails, bloodworm, and daphnia; varied diet prevents dietary deficiencies. Behaviour: Active and inquisitive; strongly territorial — house individually or with careful spacing. Compatibility: Species-only; will relentlessly nip fins of any other fish.
