About

Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, the Red-eye Tetra, is native to both the Amazon and Paraná basins and is one of the most adaptable and hardy tetras in the hobby. Its vivid red eye stands out against a clean silver body, and a yellow and black caudal fin adds further interest. An active, boisterous species that thrives in a wide range of conditions and can tolerate neutral to slightly alkaline water.

Care Guide

Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.0–8.0, very broad tolerance; one of the most adaptable tetras. Tank: 80 L minimum; community or planted tank; robust plants or hardscape. Feeding: Accepts virtually all prepared, frozen and live foods; an enthusiastic feeder. Behaviour: Active, boisterous schooling fish; keep 8+; may nip fins of slow-moving species. Compatibility: Best with robust, active community fish; avoid long-finned or very slow species.
