Pseudancistrus sp. (L098)
Also known as: Red-finned Cactus Pleco, L098 Pleco, Red-fin Orinoco Pleco
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
The Red-finned Cactus Pleco (L098) is a beautifully ornamented loricariid from the rocky, fast-flowing stretches of the Rio Orinoco in Venezuela. Its cactus-pleco body texture — dense, sharp odontodes covering the flanks — is paired with vivid red-orange fin colouration that makes it highly attractive. This combination of tactile interest and colour makes L098 a popular target for specialist collectors.
L098 demands high water flow and excellent oxygenation in the aquarium, replicating the turbulent environment of its native Orinoco rapids. It is an omnivore that grazes on algae and biofilm while also accepting meaty supplements. Offer algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworm, and artemia. Driftwood provides shelter and important supplemental nutrition.
This species can be territorial, particularly toward other cactus-type plecos. Best kept as a solitary specimen or as one of a kind in a larger Orinoco biotope aquarium. Compatible with South American cichlids, larger tetras, and other Orinoco community species. The vivid red fin colouration fades if water quality is poor, making it a useful indicator of tank health.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; very strong flow and oxygenation essential. Tank: 120 L minimum; rocky decor, driftwood caves, powerhead for current. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched veg, frozen bloodworm and artemia. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning with protein-rich foods and water changes may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Territorial with conspecifics and similar-looking cactus plecos; peaceful with dissimilar fish.
