Distichodus affinis
Also known as: Red-finned Distichodus, Small-scaled Distichodus
Origin: Congo basin, Central Africa
Distichodus affinis — the Red-finned or Small-scaled Distichodus — is a particularly attractive species in which all fins are flushed with vivid red-orange, contrasting dramatically against the silvery body marked with vertical dark banding. Juveniles are especially colourful; the colouration softens somewhat with age but remains eye-catching in well-maintained adults.
As a true herbivore, D. affinis will demolish soft aquatic plants rapidly. Robust or artificial planting combined with rocks and driftwood is the recommended approach. Strong filtration and water movement reflecting its native Congo River habitat are essential. It is generally peaceful towards unrelated species but displays mild territorial behaviour towards conspecifics.
Plant-based diet is paramount: spirulina flake, algae wafers, herbivore pellets, and regularly offered blanched vegetables such as courgette, spinach, and peas. Protein supplementation from frozen foods maintains condition. Large regular water changes are essential for a species that produces substantial waste.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15, KH 1–8). Tank: 400 L minimum; secure lid; robust or artificial decor; powerful filtration and strong flow. Feeding: Spirulina flake, algae wafers, herbivore pellets, blanched greens; supplement with frozen foods. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust fish; mild aggression with conspecifics.
