Yssichromis pyrrhocephalus
Also known as: Red-head Victorian, Pyrrhocephalus Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
Yssichromis pyrrhocephalus is a planktivorous Victorian cichlid and one of the many haplochromines that has suffered severe population declines from the introduction of Nile Perch into Lake Victoria. Its vivid red head makes it instantly recognisable. Aquarium-held populations are critically important for conservation and species preservation.
Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; pristine conditions to support this sensitive species. Tank: Minimum 150L; open swimming space with some rocky structure and plant cover. Feeding: Planktivore diet of fine floating pellets, frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and mysis. Behaviour: Relatively peaceful for a Victorian haplochromine; males display to females frequently. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid community; suitable with other peaceful mid-sized Victorian haplochromines.
