Geophagus steindachneri
Also known as: Red-hump Eartheater, Redhump Geophagus, Red Hump Eartheater
Origin: Colombia, Venezuela
Geophagus steindachneri is a maternal mouthbrooder from the rivers of Colombia and Venezuela. Males develop a striking red nuchal hump that becomes more pronounced during spawning condition — one of the most dramatic secondary sexual characteristics in the cichlid family. It is also one of the more tolerant Geophagus in terms of water chemistry, accepting moderately hard and slightly alkaline conditions.
This species does well in harems of one male to several females, as males can be persistent in courtship. A spacious aquarium with fine sand, good filtration, and regular water changes ensures long-term health. Males can be territorial toward each other but generally peaceful with dissimilar species.
The Red-hump Eartheater is a moderately prolific mouthbrooder once established. Females incubate eggs buccally for approximately two weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Growth is moderate and young fish show the adult pattern quite early.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH); one of the more adaptable Geophagus. Tank: Minimum 250L; fine sand substrate, open areas with driftwood periphery; harem arrangement recommended. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, quality cichlid flake; varied diet maintains hump colour. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females incubate 12-14 days; condition both sexes on live foods pre-spawning. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive between males; peaceful with medium tetras, catfish, and other Geophagus.
