Cleithracara maronii var.
Also known as: Red Keyhole Cichlid, Red Keyhole, Orange Keyhole Cichlid
Origin: Captive bred
The Red Keyhole Cichlid is a captive-developed colour variant of Cleithracara maronii, the keyhole cichlid, selectively bred to express warm orange-red tones across the flanks and finnage. The species' iconic keyhole-shaped or irregular black blotch on the mid-upper body is retained, now contrasting against the warmer background colouration rather than the typical cream-tan of the wild type.
Cleithracara maronii is renowned for being one of the most peaceful cichlids in the hobby — truly community-safe with even small, delicate fish. The red variant retains this exceptional temperament while offering enhanced visual appeal. It is an ideal cichlid for planted community aquaria where bolder cichlids would damage plants or harass tank mates.
This variant does not exist in the wild; it is entirely the product of selective captive breeding. It breeds readily in the aquarium and makes an outstanding choice for aquarists new to cichlid keeping who want a reliable, non-destructive breeding project.
Water: Temperature 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; broad tolerance; one of the least demanding cichlids in terms of water chemistry. Tank: 100 L minimum; planted community tank suitable; does not uproot plants; provide some caves for breeding security. Feeding: Omnivore; community cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable flake; feed twice daily. Breeding: Open spawner on broad leaves, rocks, or cave roof; both parents guard fry; fry are easy to raise. Compatibility: Fully community safe; the most peaceful cichlid available for a planted community tank.
