Caridina cf. spinata
Also known as: Red Line Shrimp, Sulawesi Red Line Shrimp
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
The Red Line Shrimp is a Sulawesi endemic Caridina distinguished by a vivid, continuous red lateral stripe running along the length of its dark body. This singular pattern sets it apart from the spotted Sulawesi species, creating a sleek and dramatic appearance. Like all Sulawesi lake endemics, it evolved in the geologically ancient, chemically unique conditions of the Malili lake system.
As with other Sulawesi shrimp, the Red Line requires warm, hard, alkaline water carefully prepared to replicate its native environment. Standard freshwater aquarium conditions will cause rapid decline; only a dedicated Sulawesi biotope setup with appropriate mineral supplementation will sustain this species long-term.
The Red Line Shrimp is rarely available and highly sought after by Sulawesi biotope specialists. Its elegant, unique patterning makes it a standout species even within the remarkable Sulawesi shrimp group.
Water: 27–30°C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 6–10, KH 4–8; Sulawesi mineral-enriched RO water essential. Tank: minimum 30 L Sulawesi biotope; smooth rocks and algae coverage; fine sand substrate. Feeding: biofilm and microalgae primary; supplement lightly with spirulina and Sulawesi shrimp food. Breeding: difficult; small clutches of large eggs; slow development. Compatibility: Sulawesi-only biotope; no fish; other Sulawesi shrimp compatible.
