About

The Red Line Torpedo Barb (Sahyadria denisonii), also known as Denison's Barb or Roseline Shark, is one of the most spectacular barbs in the aquarium hobby. Native to the fast-flowing hill streams of Kerala and Karnataka in India's Western Ghats, it has a torpedo-shaped silver body decorated with a vivid red stripe running from snout to mid-body, a black lateral stripe below, and yellow and black accents on the dorsal and caudal fins.

This species grows to 15 cm and requires a spacious aquarium with strong current and high oxygenation to replicate its native riverine habitat. It is an active, boisterous schooling fish that needs to be kept in groups of 6 or more; lone individuals become stressed and may exhibit aggression. In a large group, they display spectacular coordinated swimming.

Red Line Torpedo Barbs are unfortunately listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to overcollection from the wild and habitat loss. Most specimens available today are captive-bred, which is preferable. They are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet including quality pellets, flake food, and frozen or live foods.

They are generally peaceful toward other fish but their size and energy can overwhelm small or timid species. Best kept with other robust, similarly-sized fish in a large, well-filtered aquarium.

Care Guide

Water Parameters: Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 18–25°C, and moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Cool, well-oxygenated water is essential — they are sensitive to high temperatures and low oxygen. Strong filtration and a powerhead or spray bar return replicate the fast-flowing rivers of their origin.

Tank Setup: Minimum 250 liters for a group of 6. Use a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with smooth boulders and robust plants that can tolerate current. Provide open swimming lanes and strong water movement. A tight-fitting lid is essential as these fish are powerful jumpers.

Feeding: Omnivores that readily accept quality flake food, medium pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. Feed twice daily. Variety in diet enhances their vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Compatible with other robust, similarly-sized fish: larger tetras, cichlids that tolerate cooler water, large rasboras, and bottom-dwelling loaches. Avoid very small fish that may be bullied. Do not keep with shy, slow species.

Health: Generally hardy but sensitive to poor water quality and high temperatures. Ensure water changes of 30% weekly. Watch for ich, bacterial infections, and signs of oxygen depletion. Their most common issue is temperature stress — keep below 25°C consistently.
