Carassius auratus
Also known as: Red Lionhead, Lionhead Goldfish, Shishi Goldfish
Origin: China
The Lionhead is the Chinese counterpart to the Japanese Ranchu, characterized by a full raspberry-like wen covering the entire head and cheeks, with no dorsal fin. The Red Lionhead is an eye-catching fish that thrives in stable, clean coldwater conditions. The wen can occasionally cover the eyes or gills, requiring occasional trimming by experienced keepers.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, pristine water quality to prevent wen infections. Tank: minimum 120 L, gentle filtration, no heater required. Feeding: sinking pellets and peas to prevent air-gulping; feed twice daily in small portions. Behaviour: slow and docile; does better with similar-speed tank mates. Compatibility: other lionhead or ranchu goldfish; avoid fast species that steal food.
