Rineloricaria sp. 'Red'
Also known as: Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish, Red Lizard Pleco, Red Whiptail
Origin: South America (captive-developed from wild Rineloricaria stock)
The Red Lizard Whiptail is a selectively bred colour morph developed from wild-type Rineloricaria sp. populations, believed to originate from the aquarium trade over several generations of selective breeding. The vivid brick-red to orange-red colouration is expressed consistently in quality captive-bred specimens and contrasts strikingly with the natural brown tones of wild Rineloricaria. This morph has become one of the most popular catfish variants in the hobby.
In terms of care, the Red Lizard Whiptail follows the same requirements as its wild-type relatives — a clean, planted or decorated aquarium with sand substrate, moderate filtration, and a diet based on algae wafers and fresh vegetables. Its captive origins mean it is fully adapted to aquarium conditions and is one of the more forgiving loricariid species for beginners.
Breeding the Red Lizard Whiptail is straightforward and follows standard Rineloricaria protocols. Males guard eggs deposited in tubes or under flat surfaces. Offspring reliably express the red colouration when both parents are quality specimens, though variation in intensity can occur.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15); adaptable captive-bred species. Tank: 60 L minimum; PVC tubes or caves for spawning; sand substrate; plants a bonus. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched courgette and spinach, spirulina tablets. Breeding: Easy tube spawner; male guards eggs; red colouration reliably inherited. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; peaceful with virtually all non-aggressive species.
